Ocean’s 8 steals a $41.5 million opening, setting franchise record
Warner Bros. Pictures‘ Ocean’s 8, the all-female spin-off of the Ocean’s franchise, took the #1 spot at the domestic box office and opened to a franchise record this weekend. Debuting to $41.5 million, just barely beating out the previous record holder Ocean’s Twelve, the film now has the highest opening weekend of any of the Ocean’s movies (unadjusted for inflation). Internationally the film brought in an additional $12.2 million in 16 markets, bringing its worldwide total to $53.7 million. Directed by Gary Ross, the spin-off stars Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett plus Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson and James Corden.
Disney and Lucasfilm‘s Solo: A Star Wars Story is brought in another $15.2 million at the domestic box office and another $11.3 million internationally. The Star Wars Story now sits at $176.1 million domestically and has a worldwide total of $312.2 million. The film remains the lowest grossing of all the live-action Star Wars movies and sits far behind the other recent features from Lucasfilm by a significant margin (Rogue One, the lowest grossing new Star Wars movie before Solo, still sits at $1.056 billion worldwide). Directed by Ron Howard, the film stars Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Joonas Suotamo. Woody Harrelson Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Paul Bettany, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
20th Century Fox‘s Deadpool 2 sliced its way to third place with an additional $13.65 million domestically, bringing its stateside total to $278.6 million; the movie still sits behind its predecessor by about $65 million. Internationally, the Merc with a Mouth brought in another $18.5 million bringing the worldwide total for Deadpool 2 to $655 million. For the entire X-Men series it now sits in third place behind the first Deadpool and X-Men: Days of Future Past. The David Leitch-directed film stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, and Jack Kesy.
Creeping up in fourth place was A24‘s familial horror film Hereditary which brought in $13 million and has set a record for the highest opening weekend for the independent distributor. Hereditary surged past A24’s previous highest opener, The Witch, by over 40% and will continue to roll out to markets around the world next week. Written and directed by Ari Aster the film stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd and Gabriel Byrne.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War brought in an additional $6.8 million domestically, putting its US total at $654.7 million (still sitting behind Black Panther by $45 million). Internatioanlyl the film added another $10.9 million bringing its world wide total to $1.998 billion. The film is now within spitting distance of the elusive $2 billion club (which is currently home to just Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Titanic, and Avatar).
Finally, STXfilms and Lakeshore Entertainment’s sweeping romantic survival story Adrift tumbled to 6th place but still managed another $5 million, bringing its domestic total to $21.7 million. Directed by Baltasar Kormákur (2 Guns, Contraband), the film stars Shailene Woodley (Fault in Our Stars, Divergent films) and Sam Claflin (Me Before You, The Hunger Games films).
