Incredibles 2 smashes global box office, debuting to $231.5 million

Disney•Pixar‘s long-awaited Incredibles 2 has finally arrived and the sequel has taken the world by storm and left a flurry of broken records in its wake. Domestically Incredibles 2 debuted to $180 million, setting the record for highest animation debut of all time, surpassing Finding Dory’s $135 million from two years ago. The film has also secured the #1 debut ever for a “PG” rated movie (beating out last year’s Beauty and the Beast) and marks Pixar’s 7th A+ Cinemascore ranking. Internationally, Incredibles 2 has collected an estimated $51.5 million from just 26% of the additional markets that it will open in, giving it a global total of $231.5 million. Written and directed by Brad Bird, the film features the voices of Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Vowell, Huck Milner, Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Bird, Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener, Jonathan Banks, Sophia Bush, and Isabella Rossellini.

Warner Bros. PicturesOcean’s 8 landed in second place with $19.55 million bringing its domestic total to $79.1 million. Internationally, the female caper took in an additional $19.3 million giving it a global total of $116.2 million. The spin-off still has some catching up to do with the original Steven Soderbergh directed films, which sit comfortably ahead of it even before inflation adjustments. Directed by Gary Ross, the movie stars Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett plus Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson and James Corden.

WB took the #3 spot at the domestic box office as well with their New Line Cinema comedy Tag. The movie opened to $14.6 million, putting it behind New Line’s other adult-oriented comedy from this year Game Night which opened to $17 million. Tag nabbed an additional $1.4 million from internationally markets. Directed by Jeff Tomsic the ensemble comedy stars Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis, Hannibal Buress, Isla Fisher, Rashida Jones, Leslie Bibb, Jon Hamm, and Jeremy Renner.

Disney and Lucasfilm‘s Solo: A Star Wars Story flew down into fourth place with an additional $9.1 million domestically and another $5.2 million internationally. The Star Wars Story now has a domestic total of $192.8 million and a global total of $339.5 million. Directed by Ron Howard, the film stars Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Joonas Suotamo. Woody Harrelson Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Paul Bettany, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

20th Century Fox‘s Deadpool 2 fell to 5th place, bringing in an additional $8.8 million domestically in its fifth week of release, giving it a domestic total of $294.68 million. Internatinally the X-Men film snagged another $9.8 million, giving it a global total of $689 million and making the three highest grossing movies of the year to date Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, and Deadpool 2. The David Leitch-directed sequel stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, and Jack Kesy.

A24‘s familial horror film Hereditary fell just 48% this weekend but managed to conjure up an additional $7 million this weekend. The critically acclaimed horror film now has a domestic total of $27.1 million, making it the distributor’s third highest grossing release and putting it within striking distance of #2 (Moonlight which sits at $27.85 million). Written and directed by Ari Aster the film stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd and Gabriel Byrne.

Columbia Pictures’ remake of Superfly debuted in 7th place with a 3-day total of $6.3 million. The film premiered on Wednesday, June 3 and brought in an additional $2.1 million during last week for a five-day total of $8.44 million. Starring Trevor Jackson, Jason Mitchell, Michael Kenneth Williams, Lex Scott Davis, and Jennifer Morrison, the film is directed by Director X.

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War brought in an additional $5.3 million in the US, pushing its total to $664.2 million and surpassing Titanic to become the #4 highest grossing release of all time domestically. The film brought in an additional $3.1 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $2.02 billion, having crossed that threshold earlier this week.
