Adrift Review: Shailene Woodley Keeps This Vessel Afloat

<img src="https://https://static1.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Adrift-movie-2018-poster.jpg" /><p>Though it combines swooning romance with harrowing survival drama, <a href="https://screenrant.com/tag/adrift/"><strong><em>Adrift</em></strong></a> is most engaging when it plays out as a visceral thriller about staying alive while stranded on the ocean. Based (somewhat loosely) on real life events, <em>Adrift</em> finds director Baltasar Kormákur operating in territory that he has clearly grown comfortable with; having previously called the shots on the 3D adventure <a href="https://screenrant.com/tag/everest/"><em>Everest</em></a> and Icelandic drama <em>The Deep</em>, both of which were also inspired by real world man vs. nature stories. Kormákur takes the time to get audiences invested in the human characters here (even when they're not battling the elements) as he's done in films past, yet the results are mixed this time around. A solid dramatization of real world events, <em>Adrift</em> is nevertheless more compelling as a grisly survival drama than a love story.</p><p><em>Adrift</em> takes place in 1983, where Tami Oldham (Shailene Woodley) is a young 20-something wandering the world and looking to leave her old life in San Diego behind her. Upon making her way to Tahiti (it is, indeed, a magical place), Tami crosses paths with Richard Sharp (Sam Claflin), a 30-something sailor whom she quickly takes a liking to and, some five months later, falls properly in love with.
