Supernatural 13.22 ‘Exodus’ promo

The CW has released the new promo for next week’s Supernatural Episode 13.22, titled “Exodus,” which finds Sam, Dean, Mary and the others face-to-face with Lucifer who tells the group they need him to win the battle against Michael, but who is seemingly only interested in finally meeting his son, Jack. Check out the Supernatural Episode 13.22 promo below and continue reading for a recap of episode 13.21, “Beat the Devil.”

Last night’s traumatic episode started off with a few laughs, a hookup, and ended in tragedy and heartbreak in the way only Supernatural can pull off. The episode starts with Sam having a dream about his friends and family — Dean, Mary, Jack, and Castiel — safe and sound in the bunker together just chatting and eating pizza. Mary and Jack are safe, and Sam finally gets a nice conversation with his mom before his alarm goes off and jolts him back to the harsh reality that they’re about to crossover into the Apocalyse World.

Rowena’s spell to open the rift initially fails thanks to Gabriel’s minimal amount of archangel grace that he’s able to produce, and Cas immediately says they only have one other option. Sam, knowing that the angel is referring to Lucifer, says no, years of trauma and torture on the back of his mind every time Lucifer is even mentioned. In the end, though, the brothers go along with Castiel’s idea. As Sam comes up with a plan, sparks fly between Rowena and Gabriel and the boys are mentally scarred after coming back to the library and discovering what the witch and the archangel have been up to in their absence.

After Gabriel and Rowena drug Lucifer, who’s licking his wounds in a bar over not knowing where his son, Jack, is, and the two drag the devil back to the bunker handcuffed by Rowena’s magic, we discover Sam’s plan is for Rowena to slowly drain Lucifer’s grace so that the rift can remain open permanently, or at least until they get back with Mary and Jack. Sam, Dean, Gabriel, and Castiel then head out, leaving Lucifer behind to annoy and bait Rowena as she continues the spell to keep the doorway between the two worlds open.

In Apocalyse World, Sam is starting to feel a bit more positive since after all of this time wanting to find their mother and Jack, they’re closer than they ever have been and he’s optimistic that they’ll be able to save them. As Cas takes Gabriel aside to fill him in on heaven’s dire situation — aka not having enough angel’s around to keep the lights on — the group hears screams and the brothers lead a mini rescue mission to save two survivors who were headed towards the camp of rebels where we later find Mary and Jack. Sam tells the two that they’ll keep them safe and all of them continue on their journey.

Back in the bunker, Rowena becomes fed up with Lucifer’s taunts and to cause the devil some pain in revenge, she tells him that Sam, Dean, and the others are not just going into the AU to save Mary, but Jack as well. The witch rubs it in Lucifer’s face that Jack looks to Sam, Dean, and Castiel as his “three fathers” and that he’ll be glad to see them when they arrive, making a point that Lucifer may be his biological dad but he certainly isn’t his family. Lucifer becomes angry and breaks through the magical cuffs. He attacks Rowena, intending to kill her, but the witch propels him backward, inadvertently launching him through the rift. Later, Rowena starts to pack up, monologing that this isn’t her problem, but the witch cannot deny she cares about the Winchester brothers and decides to stay behind to figure out how to keep the rift open without Lucifer’s grace so that the others are able to return home.

Back in Apocalyse World, Sam, Dean, Castiel, Gabriel, and the two survivors make their way through a set of tunnels that ends up with the group coming under attack from a set of vicious vampires. As Dean is pinned against a wall and unable to help his brother, Sam is held down by two vampires, calling out to Dean for help as one of the vampires rips his throat out. It’s a brutal, earth-shattering moment as blood gushes from Sam’s throat and he is then dragged away into one of the tunnels. As Dean fights off the vampire that was pinning him, Castiel calls out for Sam and follows him into the tunnel, only to return moments later to tell Dean that they can’t save Sam. A devastated Dean tries to go around the angel but Castiel shoves him back, a pained look on his face as he tells Dean that Sam is gone and they “don’t have time.” The time excuse is, honestly, a weak one and felt a little cold, but the moment ultimately serves as a setup for events to come later in the episode.

For the remainder of the episode, Dean is in shock, looks lost, angry, and empty as he experiences flashbacks at having just witnessed his brother essentially being killed right in front of him, again. He doesn’t say a word to anybody, not even to Mary as they finally arrive in camp and he is reunited with his mother. She asks Dean where Sam is, and in response, Dean starts to cry. Later, Jack is pacing, saying that Sam can’t be dead and yells at Castiel and Gabriel for not bringing him back. Sam was the first person after Jack was born to believe in him and make Jack feel welcome, loved, and safe in this new family, and Jack’s grief is palpable. Now that they’ve found Mary and Jack and delivered the two survivors to safety, Dean’s first words since losing Sam are to his mother, telling her that they have to go back to get Sam’s body. Dean is still numb and grieving but looks determined, no doubt beginning to brainstorm the ways he might be able to bring Sam back to life after they retrieve his little brother’s body, but before he is able to leave, the camp’s alarm goes off.

As Dean, Castiel, and Gabriel are reuniting with the others at the camp, back in the tunnels a dead and torn up Sam is suddenly brought back to life. To his horror, he finds himself face-to-face with his abuser, Lucifer, and can’t wrap his head around the fact that Lucifer brought him back. Lucifer explains that he wants what Sam has: A relationship with his son. Lucifer wants a way in with Jack, and he sees Sam as the key. If he delivers an alive Sam to Jack, maybe his son will welcome him with open arms. Sam initially wants to say no, and then Lucifer points out that he is literally keeping a horde of ravenous vampires at bay. He tells Sam that he’s going to the camp either way, and Sam can choose to come with him or basically be violently torn apart by the vampires. It’s important to note two things: Sam knows that if Lucifer wants to, he can allow Sam to be killed over and over and simply bring him back until Sam agrees to come with him. Also, Sam’s brother and mother are still out there and if he chose death, they would have to deal with Lucifer without him.

Sam, choosing life and to be reunited with his family, stumbles into camp just as Dean is ready to head back to get his little brother’s body. Jack smiles as he sees him, calling out Sam’s name as Dean, Mary, and Castiel look on in shock and disbelief. Sam gives them a brief, relieved smile, seeing his friends and family together and safe, but the moment is cut short when Lucifer appears behind him. Sam looks guilty and ashamed as the others see the devil, and Lucifer offers a simple “Hello, son” to Jack before the episode comes to an end.

Supernatural 13.22 “Exodus” will air on May 10 and is officially described as follows:

“Sam and Dean devise a plan that will save innocent lives. Meanwhile, Jack continues to wrestle with the consequences of his decisions. Thomas J. Wright directed the episode written by Eugenie Ross-Leming & Brad Buckner.”
