Sony announces dates for Mr. Rogers drama and Bad Boys for Life
Roughly four months after the announcement of its development and three months after the news of its new life, Sony Pictures has revealed new release dates for the upcoming biography You Are My Friend and Bad Boys for Life.
Starring Tom Hanks (Toy Story) and directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), You Are My Friend will be a drama inspired by a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod. The film will see a cynical journalist begrudgingly accepting an assignment to write a profile piece on the beloved icon and finds his perspective on life transformed, carrying the potential for a heart-warming story that could rival 2013’s drama Saving Mr. Banks, also starring Hanks.
Bad Boys for Life has had one hell of a journey getting to the big screen, with the initial development coming six years after the first sequel and last year seeing major progress being made, with a release date, director, script and shooting schedule all in place, only for it all to fall through when director Joe Carnahan (The Grey) left the project and Sony removed the film from its release schedule. However, it found new life in February when Belgian directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah were hired to direct the picture and stars Martin Lawrence and Will Smith were announced to be reprising their roles.
You Are My Friend will hit theaters October 18, 2019 just in time for early Oscar season, while Bad Boys for Life will debut January 17, 2020 in correlation with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend.
