
It’s clear that Ready Player One was a passion project for director Steven Spielberg. The filmmaker has gone on record about how much he nerded out filling the virtual playground of the OASIS with pop culture ephemera. Yet for all the geeking out on display in this pop culture roller-coaster, none could save it from a fundamentally flawed core premise: at its core, Ready Player One isn’t bad per se, it’s hypocritical.
